Description: Do you want to look into the future and be a part of what could be standard safety functionality in future trucks?

Intelligent safety features, such as electronic stability control, ABS, lane-keeping systems, adaptive cruise control to name a few, are becoming increasingly common in new generation transportation vehicles, along with passenger cars. The need for efficient collision avoidance systems and automated maneuvering is apparent for large, heavy-duty trucks, since the challenge of controlling their more complex dynamics and the potential damage to people and goods resulting from collisions are greater.

This MSc project is aimed at developing sophisticated high-level control and analysis tools at a traffic management abstraction layer. The methodologies to be developed will rely on receding horizon control (MPC) and reachable set calculations for the following two main tasks:

1. Computing escape paths for collision avoidance in various traffic situations involving heavy trucks.

2. Generating feasible reversing paths for docking of semi-trailers equipped with active front steering.

Conditions of employment: During the thesis work of approximately 12 months, it is seen preferred that the student spends a paid 6-month internship at Volvo 3P facilities in Göteborg, Sweden for a practicant salary level within the range of 1730-1850 euros per month. In addition, when the thesis is approved, a standard Volvo master thesis gratitude will be given to the newly graduated MSc engineer. Finally, depending on how well the thesis work is conducted and how the student works with problem solving and interacts with people, the student is also seen as a possible future employee of Volvo 3P. A standard confidentiality agreement by Volvo will apply to the MSc student.
