Description: Traffic Network Control Urban Area Decomposition based on Urban Properties

Nowadays, traffic controllers often use hierarchical and distributed control structures to solve large-scale traffic network control problems. Decomposition of the urban area is used to define sub-networks, these sub-networks are the key elements to construct a hierarchical control structure.

Information about the traffic behavior stems from measuring points. All information is usually assembled in so called Origin-Destination-Matrices. Urban properties form a novel information source in a traffic networks. Traffic controllers can use them to decompose urban areas. Examples of urban properties are the type of houses in urban blocks, the number of offices and shops, the number of cars per household, the age decomposition, etc. With these data, urban blocks can be categorized into several types, with different traveling behavior. The traveling behavior determines the traffic flow on surrounding roads, so the decomposition based on urban properties plays an important role in traffic control.

The following problems have to be studied: 1. Modeling of urban properties and traffic counts 2. Classification of urban blocks 3. Clustering of urban blocks 4. Decomposition of urban areas 5. Simulation with road networks based on the decomposition of urban areas with simple controllers
