Symposium:

Three systems and control groups within Delft University of Technology have recently merged into the Delft Center of Systems and Control (DCSC). The former groups of mechanical engineering (Okko Bosgra), electrical engineering (Michel Verhaegen), and applied physics (Paul Van den Hof) constitute the new Center, which is hosted by the TUD Department of Mechanical Engineering. The Center has a Delft-wide role in education and research, it participates in the BSc and MSc programs of mechanical and electrical engineering, applied physics and chemical engineering. Additionally it coordinates the newly started MSc program in Systems and Control, as of September 1, 2003.

At the occasion of the start of our Center, a two-day symposium has been organized on June 7,8 2004 in the Aula Congrescentre of the TUD, with the title:

Systems and Control: Challenges in the 21st Century

During two days of presentations, an overview is given of the current status and future challenges in systems and control research and its industrial applications. Both international and national researchers and engineers have presented their view on the field, with contributions from fundamental research issues (first-principles and data-based modelling, robust and nonlinear control, optimization, complex systems theory) to advanced applications in industrial process control, mechatronics and motion control systems, traffic control, physical imaging systems, aerospace systems and bioinformatics. The full program consisted of 18 plenary lectures.
